About milk

Apr 19, 2017

The Ministry of Food and Forestry Policies states that from 19 April 2017 it is mandatory to indicate the origin of dairy raw materials in Italy such as UHT milk, butter, yogurt, mozzarella, Cheeses and dairy products.

The obligation applies to cow's milk, ovine, caprine and other animal origin.

WHAT TO CHANGE FROM 19 APRIL 2017? The origin of milk and derivatives must be clearly labeled, visible and readable on the label.

If the milk or milk used as an ingredient in dairy products has been minced, packaged and processed in the same country, one word may be used, for example: "MILK ORIGIN: ITALY".

If packaging and processing takes place in the territory of several countries, other than Italy, the following entries may be used, depending on the country of origin:

- milk from EU countries: milking in one or more European countries;
- conditioned or transformed milk into EU countries: whether these phases occur in one or more European countries.

If transactions occur outside the European Union, the term "non-EU countries" will be used. Only the Dop and Igp products are excluded, which already have disciplines related to the origin and fresh milk already traced.
